If it’s open, take a quick peek to learn about the history of the area. About 3 miles from Whitetop you’ll find the Green Cove Station Museum. The Virginia Creeper Trail is a Rails-to-Trails project, which means the whole thing used to be a railroad. At that time, you’ll have rolling hills, Christmas tree farms, bubbling streams, incredible old barns and bridges, and the occasional deer or bear all to yourself! If you want to really enjoy the serenity of the Creeper Trail before the crowds arrive, park your car at Whitetop and plan on taking the shuttle back at the end of the day (or biking back, depending on your fitness level!) The real sweet spot is going to be starting on the trail at 8 am. On weekends during the biking season, shuttle after shuttle will bring couple, families, and boy scout troops to Whitetop to do this easy, family-friendly, no-fitness-required ride. You can’t go wrong Spring through Autumn (and I’ve even had some wonderful bikes here in the winter) but mid-May is when you can expect the Rhododendron to be in bloom and October is when the fall colors will be at their best. This 17-mile stretch is almost entirely a gentle downhill ride! Most people only complete half the trail by parking in Damascus, taking a shuttle to Whitetop, and then biking back to Damascus. If you haven’t been, it’s hard to imagine just how beautiful and peaceful the Virginia Creeper Trail can be! The entire trail stretches 34 miles from Whitetop Station to Abingdon, Virginia. Adventure travel: Cycling the Virginia Creeper Trailĭo you ever want to go exploring on your bike through forest and fields, past rivers and farms, and stop for lunch in the cutest little towns? What if I told you that you could bike 17 miles even if you are completely out of shape? The Virginia Creeper Trail is the place to be! Hiking, cycling, fishing, sailing… Virginia has it all. Did you know I actually lived in Virginia for a year? Whilst fifteen year old me did occasionally get a bit bored in the rural parts of the state, Virginia is absolutely stunning and a great destination for outdoor travelers and adventurers. She’s sharing her experience on cycling the Virginia Creeper Trail. I assume there are more during the summer.Today’s guest post is by Jessica Covington from Magnets from Everywhere. The only place for water we found in November was Damascus Old Mill Inn and 128 Pecan on Abingdon. They were many closed restaurants and bike shops. ![]() Note: we did not see any sources of water. Eat lunch at the Old Mill Inn, head on to Whitetop, then return back "home" to Damascus. It's only a 30 mile round trip to Abingdon and back. It's real close to the trail and makes for a good "home base" to pick up supplies and eat lunch. We found a nice place called Old Mill Inn with clean rooms and a good restaurant. Now that we have seen it all, we will ride the whole thing in one day the next time. ![]() It would have made for a very long day if we tried to ride it all (out and back both ways, 68mi) in one day. Since this was our first ride on this trail, that worked out great because we stopped to take photos so often. We stayed in Damascus, rode to Abingdon and back, stayed the night, and rode to Whitetop and back the next day. For anyone who rides more than once per week with moderate effort should ride the whole trail. The downhill was well worth cranking up it.īeginner riders should take a shuttle from Damascus to Whitetop then coast back down. I'm sure it's easy in the summer when it's dry. Coming back down took more concentration due to the ruts and footprints in the snow washing out the front tire. We rode uphill to Whitetop in 6 inches of snow. A hard tail would have probably been more efficient. We had full suspension mountain bikes, but that's just what we own. The trail tread is cinder and rides much like crushed limestone. Nonetheless, the ride was well worth our 7 hour drive. There is no single track in the entire length of trail. However the scenery is much better from Damascus to Whitetop with another 31 smaller trestles (except for one big one near Whitetop). The longer taller trestles are between Abingdon and Damascus and there are 16 of them. The trail runs from Abingdon, VA to Whitetop, VA with Damascus being approximately the halfway point. So you are always crossing bridges (or so it seems). There are 47 trestles in the 34 mile trail. ![]()
